EDU 1202: SOCIOLOGY OF EDUCATION (2 Credits Unit)
2013/2014 ACADEMIC SESSION (1ST SEMESTER)
The general objective of the course is to
present analysis of education through sociological perspectives. More
specifically, explanations and inter-relations of education issues,
organization and practice will be approached at the macro and micro
sociological levels. The orientation will be mainly to a synthesis of theory and
practice.

ü Relevance of sociology of education to classroom
teacher.

and Culture:
ü Education and Culture defined.
ü Types of culture.
ü Relationship between Education and Culture.
ü Socialization defined.
ü Stages and agents of Socialization.
3. Social
Stratification:
ü Social stratification defined.
ü Agents of social stratification.
ü Equality of educational opportunity.
ü Education and Social mobility.
4. School
as a bureaucratic Organization:

ü Concept

ASSESSEMENT
1) You
MUST meet 75% attendance to qualify
to sit for the examination.
2) One
take home assignment (before or after the mid-semester break) carries 20 marks.
3) One
class test before the end of course which also carries 20 marks.
4) End
of semester examinations carries 60 marks.
